The Devasation of Hurricane Harvey

As the devastation of Hurricane Harvey impacts many in and around the Houston area, we are reminded that Service Above Self rings true in all aspects of our lives. I know many of you have been personally impacted by this devastating act of nature and our prayers, thoughts and well wishes go to you and your entire families. You are a part of our family and should you need help, please let us know.

I had an update letter ready for all of our sponsors before Hurricane Harvey, but with the recent happenings I did not send it. As we continue to help those in need, our club stands by you and others in an effort to get back to “normalcy”. There are many needs in and around our community. Like you, our club of 70 volunteers continues to help others – clearing out homes, cutting sheetrock, discarding trash, distributing supplies and food, and feeding our troops at Katy High School. We truly live in a great community and country, and seeing everyone coming together to help one another is an awesome sight.

The Wild West Brewfest (WWBF) is the furthest thing from our minds at this time, however we know that this current crisis with Hurricane Harvey will indeed pass with time. As always, the Rotary Club of Katy will be here helping others no matter what the circumstance might be. Therefore, we want to update you on some allocations and the addition of $10,000 which is allocated out of new funds for flood victims over the last week.

Prior to Hurricane Harvey our club had allocated the following (of course, we will support all these great causes and many more):

Camp Hope $5000
Camp Hope provides interim housing for our Wounded Warriors, veterans and their families suffering from combat related PTSD in a caring and positive environment. We are excited to help this worthy cause, as so many of our military come back with much more than just exterior scars.

West Side Homeless, $3000
Westside Homeless Prevention has been providing hope and the opportunity for a better future for homeless children and their families on the West Side of Houston. Our club strives to help those in need that fall onto hard times. We proudly support this organization where studies indicate that $20 of long-term value is created for each $1 invested in the program.

Taylor High School – KISD $500
We are proud to continue to support our local High School Band organizations. These funds will support young students to increase participation and access to certain off campus functions not available without outside funding sources.

Katy Christian Ministries $2000
KCM continues to help many families in and around Katy through God’s grace and the generosity of the community. WWBF and the Rotary Club of Katy are committed to the donation of several thousand pounds of meat to KCM upon completion of the FFA Auction. KCM offers several programs such as Social Services, Food Pantry, Crisis Management and counseling services.

Armor of Hope $3000
Armor of Hope is a Katy Non-Profit that touches many lives by serving the community while focusing on families and children. We are excited to support this great organization

Thank you once again for your support, we truly owe you our gratitude as you make our event and our club special. We know you have several opportunities to donate your capital throughout the year and we are grateful that you have chosen the WWBF and the Rotary Club of Katy – thank you!

God Speed for a rapid recovery from this devastating storm.
